What were the actual reasons for the demolition of the "Palast der Republik"?
Why weren’t the east berliners asked for their opinion?
Maybe they simply didn’t want to have anything to do with the whole thing or
they just wanted to definitively close this episode
I realised it was never clear to me what it really was
or what it could mean to the berliners
Sitting in Lustgarten at dusk and the sun was shining,
the "Palast" looked like a real palace, radiant as if it were made of gold
It had become a different place anyway, and I was not
the little boy I was in those days anymore
No one could believe that the "Palast der Republik" would be demolished,
but it is no longer there!
And, of course, the idea of reconstructing the castle represents an intent
to erase an entire period of history
We had to watch it ailing to the point where we could only think of its demolition
and no one could remember it as a whole anymore
It looks like the area was damned. Now that they have pulled down the "Palast"
they want to rebuild the castle. Maybe in a few years they'll decide to build the "Palast" all over again
